Energy Modeling Capabilities

MKK offers a suite of energy modeling services using accurate building performance simulation. Building energy consumption is modeled by studying the electricity, water, and fuel usage. These three components are calculated by examining a building’s thermal, lighting, and occupant usage. MKK surpasses normal thermal simulation techniques—modeling of only envelope construction and climatic data—by incorporating complex shading devices and the effects of adjacent buildings. Occupant load calculations can follow complex schedules, multiple tenants, and detailed equipment loads. In addition, lighting calculations take daylighting and neighboring buildings into account when being modeled. Snapshots can be taken of the interior spaces of the building, as well as of the exterior of the building, to give the building owner a visual representation of daylighting capacity and building shading. Water usage modeling incorporates the latest water efficient fixtures and strategies, helping to minimize usage. Once the model is fully designed, MKK’s engineers can rapidly experiment with the effects that changing construction types, orientation, occupant density, etc., have on the overall performance of the building. This experimentation in conjunction with feedback from a building owner/operator, finely tunes the building performance to meet the needs of the tenants while utilizing the minimal amount of energy.
